The Health Ministry yesterday ordered hospital authorities to remove phials containing the Cloxacillin vaccine after the detection of an unknown particle inside a vaccination phial at the Medirigiriya Base Hospital on Sunday.

Ministry spokesman W. M. D. Wanninayake said that the phials belonging to imported batch No. CC2004 would be removed from hospitals immediately.

"We tested the suspected phial at the National Drug Quality Assurance laboratory following a complaint received by the Medical Technology and Supplies Division of the ministry," he said.

Wanninayake said that the phial of antibiotic had failed the test and the ministry had decided to remove all the phials under the same code immediately.

He said that the company which imported the drug had also been informed of the ministry decision to withdraw the drug.

Asked whether the ministry would take action against the company, Wanninayake said that it was the first time such an incident was reported from that company and it would take action if similar incidents were repeated thrice.
