Two bottled water producers prosecuted

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Director General Health Services (DGHS) yesterday took legal action against two bottled water producers for failing to register under the Food Act No. 26, 1980.

Health Ministry spokesman Dharma Wanninayake said that steps had also been taken to withdraw all bottles of water bearing trade names ‘Amaron,’ and ‘Ceylon Water.’

Wanninayake said that the labels on the bottles had attempted to imitate another well known brand, to dupe the public into purchasing them. The DGHS had taken action against the producers of Amron (No. 190/D/1 Samurdhigama, Kotagoda, Opatha) and Ceylon Water (2nd Stage, Karmanthapura, Paradisewatta, Kuruwita, Ratnapura), while issuing instructions to have the two brands removed from the market. Instructions were also issued to stop the production of the two products, he said.

The spokesman said the Health Ministry had carried out inspections on all bottled water manufacturers owing to health concerns which had arisen during the past few months, regarding the quality of water purchased by the public. There were a large number of institutions which manufactured and retailed bottles of mineral water. However the hygienic levels of some of the manufacturers were highly questionable. Many of them targeted the Pettah bus stand where commuters hurriedly purchased bottles of water without paying much attention.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Municipal Council’s Public Health Department (CMC PHD) collaborated with the Health Ministry to carry out inspections on Wednesday (11) in the Pettah. PHD Chief Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that the ‘Amron’, production company had shut down a few months earlier. The possibility of the bottles being those which were in stock was debatable, he said. However the bottles themselves were new which had led the PHD to believe that they were imitations.

The brand was being retailed to commuters at the Bastian Mawatha bus stand in the Pettah. He said that there was also a shop near the bus stand which had a large quantity of the product available.
