PC poll: Political parties wrap up campaign on Wednesday

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will wrap the PC polls campaign with a series of rallies on Wednesday, when campaigning officially ends at midnight.


The election to the three PCs will be held on September 21.


The President will address a political rally – the final in the Northern province in support of UPFA candidates — in the Mullaitivu district at the public esplanade today at 3 pm, party sources said.He is also scheduled to address a meeting in the Talawakelle town at 6 pm.


On Tuesday, the President is scheduled to address a campaign rally in the Kuliyapitiya town before winding up the campaign with a political rally adjoining the public market complex in Kandy town.


UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to address a propaganda campaign rally at the Ragala town in the Walapone electorate today. The same evening, he will also speak at a meeting at Sunrise grounds in Norwood.


On Monday, he will preside at rallies in the Kadugannawa town,


Geli-Oya and Akurana. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to address a rallies at Kimbissa, Pawaraswera settlement and Ukuwela.


On Wednesday, he will speak at political meetings in Chilaw and Thotupothathota in the Waikkal area, UNP sources said.


The Peoples Liberation Front (JVP) General Secretary, Tilvin Silva is scheduled to address a campaign rally on Monday at Watawala in the Nuwara Eliya electorate, Propaganda Secretary of the party, parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said.


He said the JVP is not holding election rallies with the participation of the party leadership, but had instead divided the propaganda campaign amongst its politburo members Lal Kantha, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sunil Handunetti, Bimal Ratnayake, and Ramalingam Chandrasekeran, who have assigned to hold pocket meetings.


The JVP has scheduled meetings on Monday at Muruthalawa and Yahalatenna in the Kandy district. On Tuesday, JVP leader, Somawansa Amerasighe will preside at a rally in the Teldeniya town.


On Wednesday, the final day of campaigning, Tilvin Silva will speak at political meetings in Kurunegala, while the party leader will preside at a campaign rally at Matale.
