Four persons, wanted in connection with last Saturday’s attack on the Polhena male hostel, of the Kelaniya University, surrendered to the Kelaniya police yesterday.

They were remanded till September 20 by the Mahara Magistrate.

Police sources said that all were from the same village in the area and two more susprcts were being sought.

The attack took place around 3.30 a.m. on Saturday. The gang armed with iron rods and bicycle chains damaged a car and 14 motorcycles, parked in the hostel premises. They also damaged property, including chairs, tables and windows. They forcibly removed two security personnel before entering the hostel premises, which accommodated over 400 students.

The Police had set up a 24–hour police post near the hostel as an immediate remedy. It had also decided to deploy foot patrol between the hostel and the university.

Police mobile patrols are also operating in the area.

The hostel undergrads, who are occupying the University Sports Pavilion following the attack, are however refusing to return to the hostel till enhanced security was provided.

President of the Students’ Council Kingsley Gunathilake said that around 400 undergraduates continue to occupy the sports pavilion as they feared to go back to the hostel.

"We sought a discussion with the university administration, but were refused," he said.

Gunathilake said that it was not the first time they had been attacked and the only option was to set up the male hostel within university premises.

He said that they would not vacate the sports complex until an acceptable solution was given by the university administration.

Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Sarath Amunugama was not available for comment as he was at a meeting during the entire office time.
