Interdicted Deputy Inspector General of Police Vass Gunawardena was yesterday allowed bail in a case pending before the Mahara Magistrate Court.

He is to be granted bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each.

In this case Gunawardena is charged with demanding a bribe of three million rupees and obtaining Rs. 1.5 million from Sarath Edisrisinghe, alias Singapore Sarath, a witness in the assassination of Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Hasitha Madawala, not to kill him.

Magistrate Ms. Dharshika Wimalasiri in granting bail, ordered the suspect not to influence any of the witnesses in the case and warned that in the event of him violating that order the bail would be cancelled. Ms. Wimalasiri also ordered that the sureties should be blood relatives of the suspect and their and his addresses should be ascertained.

The suspect was also barred from going abroad.

CID Investigations Division OIC Inspector Ranjith Munasinghe told the court that the suspect had submitted a written statement to court and that had been forwarded to the Attorney General for advice. Pending the receipt of that advice he objected to the suspect being granted bail.

Inspector Munasinghe also told the court that the suspect had demanded the removal of the CID officers involved in the investigation and if that request was granted a fresh investigation would have to be carried out.

Senior defence attorney Anura Seneviratne, making submissions, said that the CID should not panic over the suspect making a written statement. There was a problem of providing security to his client when he had to be produced in court every two weeks and therefore he pleaded for bail under any condition.

When the Magistrate queried from the CID whether their investigations were over, the officer replied in the affirmative. There upon the Magistrate said bail could be granted.

Further hearing was postponed to October 21.
