North, South state appointments across racial lines

The Government intends to appoint the state employees from North to work in South and vice versa to rid the communication gap and promote peaceful co-existence between Tamils and Sinhalese.

An EPDP Spokesman quoted the Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister John Seneviratne as having said that since the learning of Tamil and Sinhala languages had been made compulsory for all state employees, the government would soon appoint state workers across racial lines to work in the South and North to accelerate the government services and to build up the mutual understanding between both Tamils and Sinhalese.

The Minister, participating at a ceremony held to declare open the new Karainagar Divisional Secretariat building recently, said that as the first step, a Tamil administrative officer had been appointed as the Government Agent (GA) of the Moneragala District and two Sinhalese administrative officers had been appointed as the GAs of Vavuniya and Mannar districts.

The government, according to the Public Administration Minister, had appointed forty three new administrative officers with maximum qualifications and a considerable number of management and development assistants to the North to facilitate the state mechanism to function in the language of the Tamil speaking people.

Seneviratne said the government on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa had started to restore the Public Service both in the North and East after it virtually collapsed during the armed conflict.

He said that several such buildings had been constructed in the North as well as in the East with the intention of extending a better service to the public and some were yet to be opened.

He also said that funds required for such constructions had been obtained on credit from the Asian Development Bank and Arabian Development Fund from Kuwaiti Government and had to be settled with interest.

As the government had provided every facility to both government owned institutions and officers, a duty was cast upon them to give the best possible service to the public, he added.
