Top doc blames eateries for food poisoning

Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Mahepala yesterday blamed wayside eateries for most cases of food poisoning.

He said it had been found that they used food items not fit for human consumption.

Dr. Maheepala pointed out that schoolchildren, garment factory workers and plantation employees were prone to food poisoning and diseases due to their dependence on such eateries.

He said that it had also been found that some harmful chemicals were used as food preservatives. Raids would be conducted on all such places and legal action instituted against their owners, he warned.
