Deputy Highways Minister Mervyn Silva yesterday warned Kelaniya undergraduates not to cause any trouble or face the consequences.
Addressing an SLFP meeting at Kelaniya, Minister Silva said that he would intervene to restore peace in the event of undergraduates causing trouble. He said that he would join the people of the area to quell trouble on the campus.
Minister Silva said that he had no option but to intervene as trouble makers were not allowing the majority of undergraduates to continue their studies.
He said trouble makers in the garb of undergraduates posed a threat not only to the peace loving students who were in the majority in the university but also to the entire Kelaniya area.
The Deputy Minister said the country spent billions of rupees to maintain universities and it was the duty of the students to pursue their higher studies and pass out as responsible citizens without being a nuisance to their teachers, fellow students and the country at large.
Higher education was in the safe hands of a capable minister who meant business and the campus trouble makers had better be warned that they could not terrorise the universities unlike in the past, the Deputy Minister said.
