Union calls for probe into nursing exam paper ‘leak’

The All Ceylon Health Services Union (ACHSU) alleged that the Health Ministry had deceived trainee nurses by getting question papers for yesterday’s nursing examination set by an unauthorised person.

ACHSU General Secretary Gamini Kumarasinghe said that instead of getting a board appointed by the Health Ministry, to set the examination question papers on ward management, ward sisters and ward masters, a junior matron had been assigned to do it. He said she would have had the opportunity to pass the questions to her favourites and therefore his union wanted the Health Secretary to hold an impartial inquiry into the matter.

Kumarasinghe said that ACHSU had come to know from a reliable source that the question papers for yesterday’s nursing examination were illegal because they had not been prepared by a board appointed by the Health Ministry.

Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka, contacted for comment, said that it was the responsibility of a board to prepare the question papers for the nursing examination. Deputy Director General Sunil de Alwis was responsible for preparing the papers. The Ministry had never got a junior matron to prepare the question papers, he stressed. But, the board must have taken some of the set questions from an experienced matron. Generally, the Ministry obtained questions from experienced matrons to prepare the question papers for the nursing examination, he said.
