RDH ruffles GMOA’s feathers

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday accused Puttalam District Regional Director of Health (RDH) of ill-treating interns posted to the government hospital in his area.

GOMA media spokesman Dr. Navin de Soysa said that about 20 post-intern doctors, who had been posted to Puttalam, had visited RDH Dr. Paul Ranjith’s office for their orientation course, prior to assuming duties, but the RDH was not available.

Dr. Soysa added that the interns had waited for a long time and on finding that there was no sign of the RDH turning up they had complained to the GMOA.

He said the GMOA could not approve of actions as the RDH, as a rule, was supposed to meet the post-interns. He said the GMOA would be taking up the matter with the Health Secretary.

When contacted, Puttalam district RDH Dr. Paul Ranjith said that he had not been available yesterday as the new provincial health minister had wanted him to attend his swearing in and he had obliged.

He said that a certain GMOA officer had threatened him and demanded that he immediately attend to the interns. But, he was not ready to dance to anyone’s tune. "I am not following the instructions given by the GMOA. I am following my superiors’ orders," Dr. Ranjith stressed.
