Milco (Pvt.) Limited is developing its three factories in Ambewela, Digana and Polonnaruwa, at a cost of Rs. 6 billion. Work has just started and will take about 18 months to complete.

Milco Chairman Sunil Wickramasinghe told ‘The Island’ yesterday (9) that state-of-the-art machinery was being set up under the Desmi project funded by Denmark.

He said that the machinery included a new full cream milk powder drying tower for the Ambewela factory and Ice Cream and Yoghurt machinery for Digana and Polonnaruwa factories.

The capacity of the company with the upgrading of manufacturing facilities would help double with fresh milk

processing increasing from 300,000 litres to 600,000 litres, in just one shift per day, Wickramasinghe said. They anticipated the sales too to increase considerably, he added.

Wickramasinghe said that the present sales per month were about Rs. 700 million from all Highland products, but they were expected to reach about Rs. 1.4 billion after the development project.

The Highland products freely available in the market include liquid milk, powdered milk, ice cream, yoghurt, butter and condensed milk.
