Circulars ordering the use of fresh milk instead of powdered milk would be sent to all state-run hospitals by Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka with immediate effect along with circulars to all the organisations under the Health ministry to use fresh milk at all their functions such as workshops, media conferences and seminars.

Health Secretary had appointed two steering committees headed by Deputy Director General (public health) Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Deputy Director General Dr. A. Simbalagoda. These two steering committees would amend the existing Food Act to promote liquid milk, the GMOA said.

The Committee headed by DDG Dr. Sarath Amunugama would be responsible for amending the Food Act and preparing the legal provisions that would be incorporated in the Food Act. The committee headed by Dr. Simbalagoda would be responsible for conducting required propaganda campaigns and conducting awareness programmes to promote liquid milk.

Health Ministry had taken positive measure to promote breast feeding. Regarding the other nine proposals, Health Secretary had agreed to implement them gradually, he added.
