Suspected treasure hunters remanded

Kandy – Udadumbara Police during a mid-day operation last Friday rounded up a gang of nine engaged in illicit digging for treasure in Kobonilla sector in Meemure in the knuckles forest reserve.


The nine suspects from different parts of the country were produced before the Teldeniya acting magistrate Sarath Premakumara who remanded them till October 23.


The nine suspects including at least two who had served in the army were J. M. Palitha Jayasundara (Putuhapuwa, Watapana), K. M. Anura Bandara (Putuhapuwa), A. M. Gayan Nissanka (Matugama),K. sarathchandra (Balangoda), Shavendra Panagoda (Sapugaskanda), Pushpakuma Nimalsiri (Balangoda), A. R. M. Wijeratne Banda (Marassana), K. Sanjeewa Kumara (Balangoda) and M. G. Rang Madusanka (Kadawatha).


The raid was conducted by IP Kapila Dissanayake, OIC Udadumbara Police Station with PS 46885 Mahinda, PS 29363 Chandrasekara, PS 25655 Premaratne, PC 62881 Samantha, PC 46808 Silva and PC 47160 Jayalath.
