JVP lashes out at govt. over extravaganza

By Dasun Edirisinghe

The JVP yesterday alleged that the government had spent an exorbitant sum on designing the official website of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2013 (CHOGM) in Colombo.

JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told The Island that according to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information the government had spent Rs. 15 million on the CHOGM website instead of allowing state institutions to undertake that task.

MP Dissanayake said that currently, anyone could get a website designed for a sum below Rs. 100,000, but the government had spent Rs. 15 million of public funds on the project.

There were several government organisations capable of handling that task but a private firm had been contracted, MP Dissanayake said.

He said that the Rajapaksa government had so far failed to reveal the cost of hosting CHOGM, but Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had presented a Cabinet paper for media expenditure at the event and got it passed.

Dissanayake said that the government would spend Rs. 897 million for the CHOGM media campaign. which was of no benefit to the people.

"The government is trying to cover up its failures and the accusations levelled against it by hosting CHOGM, but it would not succeed," he said adding that leaders of other Commonwealth Countries worked with a clear vision not like Sri Lankan politicians.
