Police obtain order restraining protests

by Dasun Edirisinghe

The police have obtained a Court order restraining any party or organisation from holding any kind of protest in Colombo during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that begins today.

The Police Spokesman’s office told The Island that the restraining order was obtained from the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and it was valid until November 17.

According to the order, protests, rallies, demonstrations or protest marches cannot be held within the Colombo Municipal area.

However, The Island learns that some protests in Jaffna and elsewhere during the CHOGM period would not be affected.
