Five killed, 21 injured in bus-van collision

Five people were killed and 21 others sustained injuries when a bus and a van collided at Anuragama, Haragama on the Badulla– Tennekumbura road around 6. 30 am. yesterday.


The police said that three women, a boy and a girl, who were in the Kandy bound van from Badulla, had died on admission to the hospital. All others in the vehicle were injured.


All were relatives returning from a funeral in Badulla when the mishap occurred. The dead included the wife of the van driver, a boy aged 10 and a girl aged 12.


The driver of the van who was in a critical condition was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Kandy Teaching Hospital. Twenty others, injured are also treated at the same hospital.


Office–in–charge of the Thalathu Oya police, Inspector Sampath Sri Rajapaksha told The Island that 26 persons, including children, residents of Guhagoda in Katugastota, had been travelling from Badulla after attending a funeral.


The driver of the Kandy–Haragama bus, who was arrested was to be produced before the Kandy Magistrate.


There had been no passengers in the bus at time of the accident, IP Rajapaksha said, adding that the van was overloaded.


Thalathu Oya police are conducting investigations.


The deceased were identified as Rs. Ramyalatha (50), R. G. Inosha (35), G. Nilmini (32), Nihal Akash (10) and Nilmini Heshani (12).
