AIDS marches on

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Over one thousand eight hundred HIV cases have been detected in Sri Lanka and 451 of them are infected with full-blown Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), according to the AIDS Control Unit.

Head of the unit Dr. Sisira Liyanage yesterday revealed that there were around 1,808 HIV cases in the country.

He pointed out that AIDS had affected 451 persons. Studies have revealed that 95 percent of the HIV cases are due to unsafe sex, while four per cent of them are owing to infected pregnant mothers and blood transfusions accounted for only one percent of the cases.

Dr.Liyanage said that unsafe sex was the main cause of the spread of the disease in Sri Lanka.
