KANDY: The Kidney Transplant Unit of the Kandy General Hospital has initiated a programme to set up satellite dialysis units at regional level to ease the increasing congestion.

According to specialist surgeon Dr. P. K. Harischandra, Head of Kidney Transplant Unit of the hospital, nearly 1,000 patients have undergone kidney transplants since the opening of the unit in 2000 and at least 60 patients turn up for treatment.

Dr. Harischandra said satellite dialysis units at regional level was an urgent need as many patients undergo hardships due to congestion.

The units would function on a welfare basis to help the needy patients and, therefore, the project required public assistance, Dr. he added.

An awareness programme would be launched seeking assistance to launch the project, Dr. Harischandra said..
