Sirisena warns drug companies not to cheat

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday warned drug importing companies not to cheat the Health Ministry. He said a majority of drug companies were deliberately making errors in tender documents to create artificial drug shortages.

Drug shortages were created to compel the Ministry to make local purchases of the same drugs at higher prices, he told the media at National Blood Center at Narahenpita yesterday.

Minister Sirisena said that even the officials attached to the technical evaluation committee were involved in corrupt practices with the connivance of some bidders. The tender procedure was tampered with.

Minister Sirisena promised tough action against those who cheated the Health Ministry.
