The police have decided to severely deal with people who cause the death of others through sheer negligence.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island yesterday that anyone causing the death of another person through negligence such as by haphazard digging up of roads and drains, laying of illegal electric traps, etc., would be charged in a Court of law.

"Whether a death is caused or not, the law will be implemented against negligence," he stressed.

Asked if action would be taken against deaths caused by road construction workers dumping water and rubble on either side of the road, obstructing passers by and forcing them to take risks, he said that they, too, would be strictly dealt with.

Asked what had made the police suddenly decide to take strict action against negligence, SSP Rohana said police investigators, in the past, had left out some of the cases without going ahead though those deaths had been caused due to negligence, as the police had not taken such cases seriously.

All police stations had been informed of the new initiative, effective from November 11, 2013, by Deputy Inspector General of Police, (Administration) Gamini Nawaratne, he said.
