Skin disease not fatal

Director General Health Services Dr. Palitha Maheepala yesterday assured that a skin disease, known as Leish Maniasis, which broke out in the Hambantota, Moneragala and Ampara districts a few days ago, was not fatal.

He pointed out that Leish Maniasis was a skin disease caused by a sand fly. The disease had been endemic in 90 tropical countries. When a sand fly bit a human it passed some parasites into the victim’s body. That person would develop high fever, redness of the skin and swelling.

Dr. Maheepala said that it was a curable disease and necessary treatment was available in hospitals. The health ministry advised people to seek timely medical attention whenever they developed the above symptoms.
