Speaker Rajapaksa, too, complains of not being compensated

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa told Parliament yesterday that he, too, was entitled to compensation paid to farmers whose crops had been lost owing to the recent floods but he had received only seed paddy.

All the farmers whose paddy crop had been destroyed were entitled to compensation in addition to seed paddy, but had not received his dues, the Speaker said.

Speaker made these remarks when an argument on compensation paid to farmers flared up between UNP Anuradhapura District Parliamentarian P. Harrison and Economic Development Deputy Minister S. M. Chandrasena.

Deputy Minister Chandrasena said that compensation had been paid to the farmers who lost their crops due to floods under a maximum limit of Rs. 30,000 per acre. (SI)
