Consultant Oncological surgeon Dr. Anuruddha Tewarapperuma, attached to the Badulla hospital, performed a miraculous laparoscopy surgery on a 65-year-old male.

Dr. Thewarapperuma told The Island that a few months back, a 65-year-old man had been admitted to hospital for repeated growth of tumours in the bladder. He had developed multiple tumours all over the bladder. Although they were removed surgically, they recurred in the bladder and the prostate glands.

As a last resort he had decided to perform "radical Cystectomy" on the patient to remove the tumours. It was performed without opening the abdomen. "I performed the operation by using the laparoscopy surgery the bladder and the prostate gland were removed. A new bladder was created by using some bowels of the patient. It was called radical cystectomy. The patient is fine at the moment. In a few days the patient can go home," Dr. Therapperuma said.
