National Drug Policy to be implemented in March

Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka yesterday announced that the long-awaited National Drug Policy would be introduced with effect from March 2014.


He pointed out that the Health Ministry had completed its final observations on the Draft Bill of the Policy and it would be submitted to the Chief Legal Draftsman after December 31 at a meeting.


Dr. Jayathilaka said that a few vital provisions had to be incorporated into the draft bill.


Some more clarifications on the bill would be done by the Legal Draftsman. After whetting by the Chief Legal Draftsman the Draft Bill would be submitted to the Attorney-General to ascertain whether it was consistent with the Constitution.


Thereafter the Health Ministry would submit it to the Cabinet in February and a special gazette notification would be issued before it is presented to parliament, Dr. Jayathilake said, thanking Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena for his untiring and admirable efforts to make the national medicinal drug policy a reality for the benefit of the public.
