By Cyril Wimalasurendre

KANDY – Several hundred undergraduates of the Peradeniya University joined a demonstration organised by the students’ council yesterday, to protest against the pruning of Allied Health Sciences faculty degree period by one year.

Demonstrators carrying placards and posters demanded that the degree should remain a five-year course in keeping with the original arrangement.

The protesters also called upon the Higher Education Ministry to increase the Mahapola scholarship allowance.

They set fire to an effigy of the Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake at the Galaha Junction.

Later, they commenced a Sathyagraha on a structure constructed at the Galaha Junction.

President Students Council Dimuthu Gunasekera said the Sathyagraha would continue until their demands were met.
