By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Medical Research Institute Director Dr. Anil Samaranayaka yesterday said that highly expensive crytococal test to detect Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) that causes AIDS could be done at the MRI free of charge.

He pointed out that a majority of HIV positive patients were dying of immune deficiency because when the AIDS virus entered the body, it was capable of paralyzing the immune system.

He added that when a person was inflicted with AIDS the person was liable to many health complications. The most serious condition of HIV positive patients was meningitis. The condition very often would lead to death. The MRI had commenced Crytococal antigen test to be done free of charge.

Dr. Samaranayaka said that the Crytococal test would help doctors to protect the HIV positive persons’ immune systems from being degenerated through effective drugs.
