Over 75,000kgs of fruit were seized from the Manning Market, in the Pettah, yesterday (27) in a raid conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

Nipun Ekanayake, Media Secretary to the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando, told ‘The Island’ that a harmful chemical, known as Ethefone, had been sprayed on the fruit to ripen them.

He said that about 80 trading establishments at Manning Market were checked by the CAA raiding party and most of the fruits seized were Papaw, Banana and Mango.

Ekanayake said that the seized fruits were destroyed and traders severely warned against the unethical practice. The CAA would continue their raids to discover whether Ethefone was being sprayed on fruit in other markets island wide.
