Food poisoning leaves 350 garment workers in hospital

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

About 350 workers of a garment factory at Maharagama were admitted to Maharagama, Ingiriya, Horana and Padukka hospitals yesterday morning due to food poisoning. The victims had severe vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, the Health Ministry said.

Additional Secretary Health Ministry Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, when contacted for comment, said around 350 workers had taken ill after consuming food prepared by a catering service at Maharagama.

He said that Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka had taken prompt action to dispatch a team of Food and Drug inspectors to the spot and the alleged catering service had been sealed.

The food samples had also been obtained for testing, he said.

Sources said chicken served with rice may have caused food poisoning.

Investigations are continuing.
