SLFP gets more than 200 applications from novices to contest, but only 25 slots available

The SLFP yesterday said that it had already received more than 200 applications from novices to contest the Southern and Western Provincial Council polls on the UPFA ticket, but there were only 25 vacancies.

SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said that the nomination board would meet on January 20 to select candidates.

Applications for the nominations could be obtained from the SLFP headquarters, he said adding that the party expected to complete the nomination lists by January 27.

Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasuriya and Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana signed the gazette notifications to dissolve the councils from midnight of Sunday on the request of Chief Ministers Shan Wijelal de Silva and Prasanna Ranathunga.

The term of the Western Provincial Council is due to end on March 27 this year and the term of the Southern Provincial Council on November 4.
