The Special Investigation Unit attached to Police headquarters will launch a probe into an incident at the Peliyagoda police station, where a DIG is alleged to have rescued two suspects unfairly arrested on Sunday.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island that Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mirihana, Sumith Edirisinghe who was alleged to have stormed the Special Crime Investigation Unit at the Peliyagoda police station before forcibly taking two suspects arrested by the unit for alleged fraudulent activity, would be questioned over the matter.

Peliyagoda police had arrested the two suspects over a complaint lodged by a man that the suspects had cheated him of five hundred thousands rupees paid by him to supply mobile phones.

DIG Edirisinghe, when contacted said that one suspect was a woman suffering from cancer and the man who lodged the complaint had given them dud cheques for that amount.

Edirisinghe also said that there was a court case pending between the suspects and the complainant and while the case was proceeding the complainant had lodged a complaint at the Peliyagoda Police station.

Officer-in-charge of SCIU at Peliyagoda, Inspector Akalanka Alutgedera refused to comment on the incident claiming he had not been there at the time.
