Thief was Mangala’s close associate – Counsel

Panadura Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta yesterday released S. Priyankara, the suspect remanded earlier for stealing a laptop computer and seven bottles of foreign liquor from UNP MP Mangala Samaweera’s house in Panadura, on Rs. 5000 cash bail and Rs. 25,000 surety.

The Magistrate ordered the Panadura North police conducting investigations into the theft at the MP’s house to work according to the affidavit given by the suspect’s counsel and to file a case against the suspect on January 27.

Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasooriya, who appeared for the suspect, told the court that the suspect had a close relationship with the MP and therefore the MP had gifted a laptop and the foreign liquor to his client.

He also handed over a sworn affidavit of his client’s wife to the court.

Police arrested the suspect following the statement recorded by the cook in the house that an unknown person entered the house and ran away when he went to the room on the second floor of the house where the MP used to spend the night.

Police rushed to the scene when informed of the robbery through the police emergency number.

The cook also told the police that the suspect had fled from the house through a broken window of the bathroom used by the MP and he would have gained entrance in a similar manner.
