Nominations to be accepted from Jan. 30 to Feb. 06

Nominations for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections would be accepted from January 30, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya announced yesterday.


He said the nominations would be closed by 12.00 noon on February 06. "We will announce the date for the elections after the closing of nominations," Deshapriya said.


The two councils were dissolved prematurely last Sunday. The term of the Western Provincial Council was due to end on March 27 this year and that of the Southern Provincial Council on November 4.


Meanwhile, political parties were busy preparing their nominations.


Ruling UPFA has already received more than 200 applications from novices to contest the polls.


SLFP‚ÄąGeneral Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said that his party’s nomination board would meet on January 20 complete nomination lists by January 27.


The UNP, too, has already appointed a national nomination board comprising 13 members headed by Gampaha District MP Karu Jayasuriya.


UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said in addition to the national nomination board, six MPs had been appointed to coordinate candidates in the six districts coming under the two provinces.


The nomination board had been appointed on Tuesday by the Leadership Council and still no date had been decided for the first meeting, said Attanayake.


JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that his party, too, appointed four of their members to attend to nominations.


He identified their nomination committee members as Gampaha District MP Vijitha Herath, Colombo District MP Sunil Handunnetti, former MPs Bimal Ratnayake and Ramalingam Chandrasekar.
