By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Consultant ENT Surgeon Dr. Mrs. Chandra Jayasuriya yesterday said that the nervous deafness could be properly treated if the patient sought timely medical attention within 24 hours.

She pointed out that sudden deafness of the ears could be caused by various factors. The victims were mostly persons suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. It could happen while trying to clean ears using various instruments and stagnation of ear wax could also lead to sudden deafness.

Dr. Mrs. Jayasuriya added that the nervous-based deafness was quite different. It was caused by the internal ear nerve damage.

On most occasions people who were suffering from hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol were liable to sudden complications in the ear, she said, noting that when a person got sudden deafness, he or she should immediately see an ENT surgeon. It was always advisable to see a doctor within 24 hours, she stressed.
