Leading businessman strangled to death

A leading businessman of Nugegoda was strangled to death inside his home at Sapumal Mawatha off Subhadrarama Road, Gangodawila on Saturday night.


Sarath Kumara Hewagama (54), a proprietor of Novelty Trade Centre at Bo-tree Junction, Nugegoda was a divorcee living alone.


Police said that a son of a friend of the victim had come to stay temporarily with him on Friday (17). The boy, a GCE A/L student, attended a private tuition classes on Saturdays.


After classes, on Saturday, the student visited the businessman’s shop, according to the police. He saw the latter speaking to another person. He asked for the key to the house. Then the victim closed the shop and went home with the student and the other person in the car belonging to the businessman.


The student went into his room and closed the door. He overheard the businessman talking to the visitor in the living room.


In the meantime, he saw two more persons come in and he thought they were friends. After 11.00 pm, the student heard the businessman shouting, ‘Budu Ammo’ but out of fear he remained in the room for some time. When he came out he found the businessman’s hands tied behind his back and a noose around his neck. He promptly informed the police of the incident.


Preliminary magisterial inquiry was conducted by Nugegoda Chief Magistrate Aruna Aluthge yesterday noon at the crime scene.


The student Vijitha Ranaweera told the magisterial inquiry he was from Kalawana and he had been staying at the house of the businessman as it was convenient for him to attend classes from here.


Police had not made any arrests until yesterday evening. A laptop computer had gone missing from the house, they said.
