Bottled water manufacturers come under microscope

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Ministry of Health has received many complaints against low quality bottled drinking water and therefore the manufacturing processes of all bottled water factories would be checked, the Health Ministry says.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that he had instructed Health authorities, including Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) to check the bottled drinking water manufacturing companies urgently because many people had made complaints to the Ministry against the low quality of their products.

The Minister said that nearly 100 drinking water manufacturing companies had been registered with the Ministry. Many new companies, too, had requested the Ministry to register them.

Minister Sirisena said that some registered bottled water manufacturers had been called for a meeting on January 21 at the Borella Medical Research Institute.

He said that though around 100 companies were expected to be represented at the meeting only owners of 59 companies had been there. Sudden checks on the rest of the manufacturers would be carried out immediately by the Food and Drug

Inspectors and respective PHIs. It should be remembered that all bottled drinking water manufacturers were supposed to print on the labels the sources of water, production date and the expiry date without fail. The lid should also be sealed, the Health Minister said.
