The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) says it has only 160 to 170 personnel and three vehicles to conduct countrywide raids.

Chairman of the CAA Rumy Marzook told The Island yesterday (31) that his outfit was handicapped by a severe man power shortage though Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando extended his full cooperation.

He said the CAA needed 50 to 100 additional personnel and more vehicles if it was to do a better job. Its actual requirement was 300 personnel, he added.

The former District Judge and Prisons Commissioner General Marzook said that he and his officers were working round the clock to protect consumer rights. He won an international award for his Prisons work in 2006.

Chief Medical Officer of Health in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said that his department had only 45 PHIs in Colombo and that number was insufficient.

He said that usually there should be one PHI for 10,000 people and he had requested the Health Ministry to increase its PHI cadre to 55.

Dr. Kariyawasam added that Colombo had a fixed population of about 700,000 persons, and that there was only one Food Inspector, though there should be 12.
