The tie was level at 1-1 after Sri Lanka pulled off a thrilling morning Singles rubber, through the efforts of their long time saviour Harshana Godamanna, against the strong Philippines in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group-II Davis Cup which began at the SLTA, Colombo yesterday.

With the Doubles and the reverse Singles are on the cards, today and tomorrow, the tie will now go down to the wire with the finals day’s action deciding who will emerge victorious and assure a further year in the Zonal Group-II in the ITF organised and BNP Paribas sponsored virtual ‘World Cup’ of men’s tennis.

Godamanna’s over four-hour long battle against the touring team No. 2, Patrick John Tierro, tested the local hero who had to come back after 1-2 down in the rubber.

The second Singles was more a lop sided affair as frailties of the fifth year campaigner and current Sri Lanka National champion was thrashed in straight sets by the veteran pro, Ruban Gonzales.

Today’s only Doubles rubber will feature current ATP world number 21, Treat Huey who is fresh from his Aus Open Grand Slam quarter-final appearance. He is scheduled to partner Johnny Arcilla, one of the all-time best performers in the Davis Cup for the Philippines.

I’ll quit the day I lose both my Singles – Harshana Godamanna

On his close match yesterday:

I had not played in this level of tennis since last April. Therefore I expected there would be flaws in my game. I was mentally cramped. I found my way only towards the end of the third set. There I got an early break and won.

On Filipino number 1 Ruban Gonzales whom he will probably meet on Sunday:

He is a very tough guy who has a big serve. He will push me from the base line. He usually makes you do the game, rather than he doing it.

On his future in the Davis Cup:

I’ve told them that the day I lose both my Singles (in one tie), I will quit. That’s my view. Now I’m teaching (tennis) and it affects your game.
