UNP reformists ask Ranil to emulate JVP leader Amarasinghe

By Lal Gunesekera

UNP rebels want their National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to follow the example set by the JVP and hand over the leadership of the party to someone who could rejuvenate it and win elections.

They said that the JVP’s transition had taken place smoothly on Sunday (2) with Somawansa Amarasinghe acting as a gentleman and handing over the reins of the party to Anura Kumara Dissanayake gracefully.

Former Southern Provincial Councillor Maithri Samarasinghe told The Island yesterday (3) that he could not understand why Wickremesinghe was sticking to the leadership of the Grand Old Party which had once been headed by gentlemen of the calibre of D. S. Senanayake and Dudley Senanayake.

Gunaratne said that Wickremesinghe, who projected himself to be a great democrat at the International Democratic Union fora must emulate western political leaders.

Gunaratne said that Wickremesinghe, Karu Jayasuriya et al should take a cue from the JVP for a smooth transition of power. He said he hoped that the UNP could yet achieve that even at this late stage.
