Smooth handover of nominations, but prohibited parades outside

Elections Department yesterday evening announced that 55 political parties and independent groups had handed over nominations to contest the forthcoming Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said 49 independent groups had paid their deposits to contest the polls.

The ruling UPFA handed over nominations for three district of the Western Province yesterday and they would hand over nominations for three districts of the Southern Province today.

Then UNP, too, handed over nominations for Gampaha, Matara and Hambantota Districts yesterday and it is expected to hand over nominations for Colombo, Kalutara and Galle Districts today.

The JVP handed over nominations for all districts in the two provinces, except for the Colombo District.

Democratic Party led by Gen. Sarath Fonseka yesterday submitted their nominations for all six districts in the two provinces at relevant district secretariats.

The Elections Department said that acceptance of nominations from political parties would end at 12.00 noon today (06).

UPFA team leader for the Gampaha District, former Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga handed over nominations at the District Secretariat yesterday morning, while Alliance Colombo District team leader Udaya Gammanpila handed over the district list in the presence of UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha at the District Secretariat in Narahenpita.

Gamapaha District UNP nomination list was handed over by team leader Edward Gunasekera accompanied by MP John Amaratunga, while Hambantota District list was handed over by team leader Somapala Ekanayake.

Kalutara District UPFA list was handed over by team leader Jagath Angage in the presence of Transport Minister Kumara Welgama at the Kalutara District Secretariat, while JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva along with Kalutara District JVP team leader Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa handed over their list.

Hambantota District JVP list was handed over by former MP Nihal Galappathhthi, the Matara District list by former MP Jinadasa Kithulegoda and Galle District list by former councilor Nalin Hewage at respective District Secretariats.

JVP Gampaha District list was handed over by team leader Mahinda Jayasinghe.

According to the party, the Colombo District list would be handed over by K. D. Lalkantha today.

Meanwhile, local election monitoring NGO, Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFEE) said that several candidates had come in vehicles with garage number plates in violation of election laws.

CaFEE Chief Keerthi Tennakoon said his outfit had seen UPFA candidates using vehicles with garage numbers plates under the nose of the police.

"We complained to the Elections Commissioner with photographic evidence for using vehicles with garage numbers," he added.

CaFEE has also complained to the Inspector General of Police that parades had been held especially by ruling party candidates all over the two provinces after handing over nominations yesterday.

Head of the Police Elections Secretariat DIG Gamini Navaratne said the police had deployed special teams at every district secretariat that accepted nominations.

DIG Navaratne said that they already advised party secretaries to ask their candidates to obey election laws.
