DNA leader Sarath Fonseka is trying to adjust himself to prison conditions at Welikada where he has been sentenced for 30 months after being found guilty by a Court Martial of violating tender procedure in procuring armaments.

UNP Ratnapura District MP Thalatha Athukorale, Moneragala MP Ranjith Maddumabandara and Colombo District MP Sujeewa Senasinghe visited Fonseka in jail on Saturday (October 23) morning.

Athukorale told The Island that Fonseka was consuming the normal prison food and not allowed to mingle with other prisoners, but confined to his cell, with the authorities citing safety reasons.

Athukorale said that Fonseka was having respiratory problems and though he had been advised by doctors to exercise himself regularly he had not been able to obtain and exercise machine, which he had requested from the prison authorities. However, he had been provided with an electric fan, a television set and a bed. He also had access to newspapers and magazines brought by his visitors, she said.

Athukorale, Maddumabandara and Senasinghe spent about half an hour with Fonseka.

Fonseka’s wife Anoma is currently overseas to address a series of meetings.
