Tension prevails at the Sri Jayewardenepura University following an incident where a group of Buddhist monks allegedly attacked some university officials accompanying Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A. Karunaratne at the Bhikku hostel last night.

Dr. Karunaratne told The Island that there had been complaints from the residents of the area that their children preparing for the GCE (O/L) examination next December could not concentrate on their studies due to a lot of noise at the Bhikku hostel during the night and he had gone there with the Martial, Sub Warden and some security personnel to make inquires and also to invite the monks to a religious function to be held at the university shortly, when they were denied entry by some monks. Other university officials had been separated from him and roughed up, the VC said.

The VC and the officials who were allegedly attacked by the Bhikku undergraduates lodged a complaint with the Mirihana police last night.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Buddhist monks residing at the Bhikku hostel and Secretary of the Arts Faculty Students’ Unions, Ven. Kamburupitiye Gnanissara Thera told The Island that a group of university officials led by the Vice Chancellor had stormed their hostel and demanded to know whether four suspended student monks were still there. When the monks answered in the negative, they had been attacked, he alleged. The victims of assault, Ven. Gnanissra Thera said, had gone to the Mirihana police and would proceed to hospital from there for treatment. He said monks would stage a protest opposite the university today.
