UPFA Colombo Central Co-Organiser and Colombo District candidate for the WPC elections on March 29 Hirunika Premachandra (26) said that 30 per cent of the votes will be decided on the final day and that although numerous people were around her in the campaign trail she does not know whether they were genuine or not.

Hirunika told The Island that her popularity depended on the work she does for the people of the Colombo Central Electorate and Colombo in general and meets people as much as possible and address meetings several times a day.

She said that she had faith in winning, and would not abandon her battle to bring the murderers of her father Bharatha Lakshman, who was killed in an intra-party clash during the 2012 Local Government Elections at Kolonnawa to justice. He was ex- UPFA MP and also adviser to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on trade union affairs.

Hirunika said that she entered politics after her father’s killing in 2012 from the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP) and was certain of obtaining the support of all communities. She said that she also had the full backing of her mother Sumana and younger brother Yohendra (24) who is doing his LLB in the United Kingdom. Hirunika herself has a LLB degree and was to do her Attorney-at-Law final examination in April, but due to the WPC elections would have to postpone it.

She said that she was a novice compared to other candidates, but has the assistance of President Rajapaksa and several Cabinet Ministers, including Parliamentarians in her tough campaign.

She said that she would attempt to end gun culture and the drug menace and assist the poor and the under privileged to lead a better life.
