Nine undergraduates of the Rajarata University, including a female were arrested by the Mihintale police yesterday for continuing of a Sathyagraha disregarding a court order.

The police said that the female undergraduate was released later after questioning, but others including the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Students’ Council, were under police custody.

A tense situation arose between undergraduates and the police when police officers asked to stop their Sathyagraha.

Undergraduates of the Rajarata University started a Sathyagraha opposite the main campus in Mihintale 65 days ago against the suspension of 27 undergraduates allegedly without a valid reason.

Despite the police having obtained a court order to remove them from the public place, they continued their Sathyagraha. Later they moved to another location and resumed the Sathyagraha.

According to the police, it had obtained a fresh court order from the Anuradhapura Magistrate banning Sathyagrahas in any location in the police area, but students refused to heed it.

Then the police had to remove them forcibly, the police spokesman’s office said adding that undergraduates shouted against police at the scene.
