Commissioner General of Inland Revenue, Ms. Mallika Samarasekera said last week that no new casinos or betting centers will be registered under the Betting and Gaming Act No 40 of 1988.

"There won’t be any more new registrations in the future", she said in response to a question by The Sunday Island. She said that newspaper advertisements were placed last year calling for registrations before the deadline of June 30, 2013 deadline.

The objective was to register the existing ones following the Amendment to the Betting and Gaming Act No 40 of 1988 by Amendment No. 19 of 2013.

"We encountered problems when collecting taxes and the amendment was to overcome the delay or obstacles in this process", she noted.

At present there are five registered Casinos and 1,071 Betting Centers Registration. The earlier annual tax of Rs. 50 million charged from a Casino was subsequently increased to Rs. 100 million.

Each betting center which relays live pictures has to pay an annual fee of Rs. 300,000, while the others are imposed a levy of Rs. 25,000.
