e-Pension scheme launch tomorrow

By Dasun Edirisinghe

The government has launched an e-pension project to streamline the pension scheme of public servants. The project will be launched tomorrow, at the Department of Pensions, under the patronage of Minister of Public Administration W. D. J. Seneviratne .

Minister Seneviratne told The Island that the project aims to streamline the activities of all pensioners in the country.

The e-pension project is jointly implemented by the Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Department of Pensions.

The entire procedure from the preparation to the provision of pensions will come under a thorough transformation through this process.

Minister Seneviratne said that the e-pension scheme is the fulfillment of a pledge given through the Mahinda Chinthana to discharge the government’s responsibility to senior citizens and to bestow an honorary position on the pensioners.

He said that another facility that will be available for the pensioner under the e-pensions project is the facility the he or she will have for knowing particulars including his or her pension number issued by the pensions department via SMS using a mobile phone.

Even now the pensioner is able to know particulars about his or her pension from 2008 by entering his / her pension number at www.pensions.gov.lk.

While the total number of pensioners island-wide drawing their monthly pension currently is close upon 500,000 the number of those who receive pension benefits under the Pension Scheme for Widows, Widowers and Orphans is about a million.
