Daring heist by helmet wearing armed robbers in Negombo

Two men wearing full face helmets, who arrived at a foreign currency dealer cum jewellery shop in Negombo yesterday afternoon on a motor cycle, had robbed foreign and local currencies and gold worth about one million rupees after threatening the staff with a pistol.

Police officers, who gave chase to the robbers along the Kurana road, had been shot at by the fleeing duo to make their getaway a success, Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island.

But not a single policeman had been hit.

The exact amount of money robbed had not been ascertained yet, police media unit said.

All the police stations had been alerted about the daring robbery, the SSP said.
