More than 5, 000 kilos of chilli powder and 3000 kilos of turmeric unfit for human consumption were seized by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) from a manufacturing facility at Armour Street, Colombo 13, yesterday.

Nipun Ekanayake, Media Secretary to the Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando told The Island that 3, 000 kilos of old bread crumbs, too, had been seized.

Ekanayake said that the chilli powder and turmeric had been adulterated with crushed bread crumbs and some kind of fabric dye.

Minister Fernando had directed the CAA to increase raids on unscrupulous traders countrywide in an attempt to stop them from fleecing poor consumers to earn a quick buck, Ekanayake said.
