Five districts top leprosy count; Six new cases detected daily

Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam, Hambantota and Ampara districts have become the high risk areas as regards leprosy with six new cases being detected each day. In 2013, about 2034 persons were admitted to hospital to be treated for leprosy, according to the Health Ministry.

Leprosy had been raising its head again, the Health Ministry warned yesterday. Since last year an increase of leprosy patients had been reported from the above districts, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said at a media conference on Leprosy Prevention Programme and signing of a MOU with Fair-Med held at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday. Minister Sirisena pointed out that as leprosy was beginning to affect more and more people, preventive measures had to be taken. The ministry had decided to train 17 PHIs in leprosy prevention in India. Seventeen Sri Lankan PHIs would be going to Indian for the relevant training, the Minister said.
