The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has taken an initiative with the assistance of eight other state run institutions and the private sector to make this year’s annual Siripada Pilgrim Season a carbon free event especially considering the area’s sensitive environment.

CEA Director General Dr. Saranga Alahapperuma said that their recent survey had shown that on average a Sri Lankan visits a place of religious worship 30 times a year and their focus was to ensure carbon free pilgrimages.

The Siripada carbon free homage programme will be on April 5and 6 with the assistance of 1,000 well wishers representing from religious organizations, universities, state institutions and schools. He said that plans were underway to introduce the same methodology to other places of concern.

Dr. Alahapperuma said that environmental issues were now affecting sensitive areas such as Siripada as nearly two million people undertook the track each season.

Environment and Renewable Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha said that there awareness initiative would lead to a situation where people themselves would protect sensitive environments within few years.

He said often lack of awareness or negligence created many environmental issues in sensitive areas.
