Around 1,200 doctors attached to North-Central province, including the Anuradhapura Teaching hospital, Polonnaruwa General hospital and more than 80 government-owned peripheral clinics and central dispensaries will launch a 24-hour strike commencing at 8.00 a.m. today until tomorrow 8.00 a.m. in protest against the alleged failure on the part of the NCP to take disciplinary action against PHI a Public Health Inspector by provincial health minister S. B. Semasinghe and his Secretary.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) General Committee member Dr. Navin de Soyza said that the discussions held with the relevant authorities had reached a stalemate. Neither the provincial health minister nor his secretary had taken disciplinary action against PHIs. Bandara had been found guilty in the recent inquiry held, he said.He added that all the routine operations would not be performed and OPDs would remain closed. But emergency operations would be carried out.

The PHIs’ trade union says the GMOA is pursuing Bandara as he had exposed a corrupt doctor.
